If a model has already proven it sells, turn its colour, handle, packaging and brand details into your own private label — that is usually more stable than customizing everything to the maximum on the first order.

First, Choose the Sourcing Route: Ready Stock or Custom?

Retail umbrella buying has two genuinely different routes.

Route A: Ready stock / wholesale stock

This fits: testing the umbrella category for the first time; getting onto the shelf quickly; trialling several price bands in small quantities; e-commerce sellers who need to see clicks and conversion first; stores that want to observe which colour, size or style sells easiest; and seasons that are already close, leaving no time for full sampling and production.

The value of ready stock is not just “fast shipping.” The bigger value is this: you buy real SKUs to verify real sales, instead of predicting consumers with imagination on the first order.

Route B: Custom / private label

This fits: you already know which model sells; you need your own brand colours; you want exclusive packaging; you need your own hang tags, barcodes or retail boxes; you want a long-term SKU instead of a one-off purchase; or you need steadier seasonal replenishment.

If you are ready to develop your own umbrella line, continue with our private label umbrella OEM / ODM development page.

For many retailers the real answer is a third route: both at once

For example: pick a few ready-stock SKUs first; run one rainy season or one round of ads; see which size, colour and price band sells easiest; put your own colours and packaging on the winners; then move into custom replenishment at 200, 500, 1,000 pieces or more.

That is usually closer to real retail logic than walking into a factory on day one and asking:

“What is the cheapest price you can do?”

Do Not Fill Every Category — Build a Reason for Each SKU First

A good range is not every model from the catalogue put on the shelf. It is a range where a customer can glance at the shelf or the page and understand the difference between the umbrellas. For the first range, think in four “roles” instead of mechanically picking four products.

1. The entry SKU: a folding umbrella everyone understands

This is the best model for testing the category. The reason is simple: commuting, carrying it around, putting it in a bag, easy e-commerce shipping — and no need to educate the consumer about what it is. Common folding umbrella sizes are 19–23 inches (48–58 cm).

But do not just ask “how many folds?” A retail buyer should look at: closed length; weight; open diameter; manual or auto open; auto open-and-close; sleeve; handle size; packed volume. Two folding umbrellas are not the same product if one is “a spare for the office” and the other is “one that fits a small handbag every day.”

Current folding umbrella specifications and options are on our folding umbrellas product page.

2. The upgrade SKU: do not just change the colour — give a reason to pay more

If the second SKU is only “the first one in blue,” that is not a range structure, it is a colour structure. Better upgrade reasons are: auto open-and-close; a larger canopy; a stronger frame; a better handle; lighter; more compact; a double-layer windproof structure; a better sleeve or packaging.

Consumers will pay more when they can explain to themselves why. So when comparing two candidate models, a retail buyer can ask one question:

If I covered the price tags, could I explain in one sentence why the second one costs more?

If you cannot, the two SKUs are probably cannibalizing each other’s sales.

3. The visual SKU: straight, clear and patterned umbrellas keep the shelf from being boring

Functional products carry the sales volume, but a retail range usually needs one or two models that make people stop. Straight umbrellas have real advantages: a full canopy shows patterns better; a J-handle, wooden handle or special handle can be a design in itself; they build visual displays in physical stores; and customers understand the product shape without opening the packaging. Common straight umbrella sizes are 23–30 inches (58–76 cm).

If your store leans towards lifestyle, gift, fashion, museum shop, bookstore or tourist retail, this kind of “visibly different” umbrella means more than a second plain black folding model. Current straight umbrella options are in our product catalogue.

4. The kids SKU: not just a smaller adult umbrella

Kids umbrellas can be a strong standalone retail category, but the buying logic differs from adult umbrellas. Beyond the pattern, a buyer should check: age range; total length; weight; opening force; handle size; tips and edges; whether small fingers can get pinched; packaging and warning information; and the product requirements that apply in the target market. Common kids umbrella sizes are about 17–21 inches (43–53 cm).

If kids is a category you genuinely want to build long-term, treat it as its own product line rather than “adding two cartoon prints on the side.” The kids section of our product catalogue is the place to start.

Golf and Outdoor Umbrellas: Do Not Force Them Into the First Range

Golf umbrellas and outdoor umbrellas are all called “umbrellas,” but the buying reasons have already changed.

Golf umbrellas: an upgrade product for wide coverage and pro scenarios

Common golf umbrella sizes are 27–34 inches (68–86 cm). They fit golf pro shops, outdoor stores, automotive retail, sporting goods, premium gifting and regions that need a large canopy. They can live in the same brand as a folding umbrella, but they do not have to compete in the same store price band. If your customer base has a clear need, build a separate golf umbrella stock or custom entry. See our custom golf umbrellas.

Outdoor umbrellas: treat them as a separate sourcing project

Patio, market and beach umbrellas differ from handheld umbrellas in more than size: bigger warehouse footprint; higher per-piece freight; bases; UV protection; outdoor weather resistance; installation; commercial scenarios; spring-summer seasonality. Common sizes are about 6.5–13 ft (2–4 m).

If you run a garden centre, patio furniture, hotel or resort supply, restaurant supply or beach retail, outdoor umbrellas deserve a dedicated project. But if you are simply building the first umbrella range for a gift shop, do not force a patio umbrella in just for “category completeness.”

A More Realistic First Order Is Probably Not “4 Categories × 200 Pieces”

A common retail buyer mistake:

“Buy a little of every category, so it looks complete.”

But complete is not the same as sellable. For a first test, I prefer these three shapes:

Plan A: focused test

Main folding umbrella: 2 colours;

Upgrade folding umbrella: 1 colour;

Straight visual model: 1 colour / pattern;

Kids model: 1–2 patterns.

Cover different buying reasons first, then watch real sales.

Plan B: fast ready-stock test

Pick directly from ready stock: 2 commuter models, 1 visual model, 1 kids model. Do not chase your own colours in the first round. Watch clicks, conversion, in-store enquiries, returns and the price customers actually accept. Customize after something sells.

Plan C: private label once you have retail data

If you already know that “this 21-inch auto-fold model sells steadily every month,” then you can start asking: can it be made in our own Pantone? Can the handle change? Can the sleeve change? Can we use our own packaging? What are the prices at 500 / 1,000 / 2,000 pieces?

At that point customizing is no longer a gamble — it is amplifying an SKU that is already proven.

What a Ready-Stock Page Must Actually Answer

If you build a ready-stock section later, do not let each product say only “In Stock” and “Price: Ask Us.” That helps a retail buyer very little. The information that lets a buyer decide quickly includes:

Information

Why the buyer needs it

Current SKU / model

Easy reordering and communication

In-stock colours

Can it go on the shelf as-is?

Available quantity

Is it enough for one round of store filling?

MOQ / case pack

Sets the trial-order threshold

Per-piece size

Product positioning

Closed length

Especially important for folding umbrellas

Per-piece weight

E-commerce and user experience

Pieces per carton

Warehousing and logistics

Carton size / gross weight

Freight calculation

Existing packaging

Can it be sold directly?

Barcode status

Will it need re-labelling?

Can a logo be added?

Can ready stock become light customization?

Can hang tags be swapped?

Many retailers need this

Shipping time

One of the biggest values of ready stock

Can the same model be replenished?

Can it become a long-term SKU?

I would even put two buttons side by side on a ready-stock page: Buy / Ask for Ready Stock Price and Customize This Model. The same product then serves two buyers at once — one who wants the goods now, and one who likes the structure and wants 500 pieces under their own brand.

Work Backwards From the Target Retail Price, Not the Factory Price

The most important number in retail is not the ex-factory price. It is what the consumer is willing to pay. Then work backwards:

Retail Price → target margin → channel / warehousing / platform costs → import logistics → packaging → the product cost you are allowed to pay.

The number left over is your purchasing budget. That is far more useful than taking a complex specification to a supplier and asking:

“Can you make it cheaper?”

Because if the acceptable product cost only covers basic fabric and a basic frame, the solutions are: raise the retail price; simplify the structure; change the packaging; increase the quantity; or reduce print positions — not demanding the supplier make the same product magically 20% cheaper.

How to Use a 200-Piece MOQ: It Is Not About “Low Enough,” It Is About How You Split It

Our standard canopy customization MOQ is usually 200 pieces per colour, per design. Outdoor umbrellas usually start at 100 pieces.

For a retailer, the real value of that number is: it lets you expand the range in stages instead of betting the whole line on the first order.

Take a folding umbrella that is already proven. First batch: Black 200, Navy 200. After selling, Black is clearly faster. The second batch does not need to repeat 200 + 200 evenly — replenish according to actual sales and higher quantity tiers. The inventory trap to avoid is keeping a little of every colour just so the range “looks colourful.”

“Shelf-Ready” Is Not Marketing Words — It Is a Spec Sheet the Warehouse Can Execute

If you are a retailer, ask the supplier directly at the ordering stage:

“When the cartons arrive at our warehouse, what work is still left for us to do?”

The best answer should be close to:

“Nothing except receiving and shelving.”

A genuinely retail-ready umbrella project usually confirms these in advance:

Hang tags

With your brand, SKU, required product information and any channel requirements.

EAN / UPC / barcode

If your retail system needs official barcodes, do not leave it until after production.

Unit packing

Polybag, paper sleeve, umbrella sleeve, gift box or other packaging should follow the channel.

Carton marks

At minimum the warehouse should be able to read: SKU; Color; Qty; Carton No.; Gross / Net Weight; Carton Size.

Product photos

If you sell online, prepare the images while the goods are still at the factory. Otherwise the most awkward moment is: the goods have reached the warehouse, but the product page is not live yet.

Product Photography: Do Not Shoot Only a White-Background Front View

A retail listing that is actually sufficient usually needs at least:

One main image;

Fully open;

Closed state;

Handle detail;

Frame / open-close structure;

Fabric or pattern close-up;

Packaging;

Size reference.

For folding umbrellas, add one more: the in-a-bag size sense. For golf umbrellas, add one more: a person or scene for scale. Then the product page can be ready to go live before the buyer even receives the goods.

Kids Umbrella Compliance: Do Not Write One Standard for All Countries

Kids products need extra care, and the applicable requirements depend on the country, the age grading, the product design, the materials and the sales channel. The EU and the US, for example, each have their own children’s product, toy safety, chemical and labelling requirements.

So the safer buying approach is not:

“Please give me every certificate you have.”

It is:

“We will sell this kids umbrella in [country], for [age range], through [channel]. What testing and documents should be confirmed for this exact specification?”

Then confirm the actual test items according to the target market and the final product specification.

Seasonal Buying: Count Backwards From the On-Shelf Date, Not the Factory Ship Date

Umbrellas are a classic seasonal product. By the time customers are already searching for umbrellas in volume, starting to discuss sea freight is usually too late. Common reference times today:

Stage

Reference time

Pre-production sample

7–10 days

Bulk production

15–25 days

Outdoor umbrella bulk production

20–30 days

Express courier

3–7 days

Air freight

7–12 days

Sea freight

25–35 days

Then add on top: artwork confirmation; sample revisions; customs clearance; warehousing; product photography; listing setup; buffer. So a retail buyer should plan backwards from the Launch / On-Shelf Date, not forwards from the PO Date.

For a Selling SKU, the Second Order Coming Back Identical Matters More Than a Few Cents Cheaper

Retail money is really made on replenishment. The first batch is only a test. If an SKU already has reviews, search ranking, shelf position and fixed consumer recognition — and the second batch suddenly changes colour — you have effectively broken a product that was already proven. So keep at least three things for every reorder:

Pantone / colour reference

Do not keep only photos.

The approved physical sample

Bulk production and the next batch both take it as the reference.

A versioned specification sheet

If the second batch intentionally changes the handle, packaging, logo, colour code or sleeve — upgrade the version. Do not let “we assumed it was the same as last time” become your specification management.

Before Buying Umbrellas, Ask Yourself These 10 Questions

Why does this SKU exist in my range?

Can I explain the difference from the umbrella next to it in one sentence?

What is my target retail price?

What landed cost am I allowed?

Should I test with ready stock first, or is it already worth private label?

Does every colour really need to be in the first order?

Can packaging, barcodes and hang tags all be finished before the goods reach the warehouse?

Can the product images be ready before the goods arrive?

On which day do I actually go on shelf — not on which day do I place the order?

If this SKU takes off, can the second batch come back identical?

If all ten have answers, comparing unit prices after that will be far more effective than sorting an Excel sheet of quotes from ten factories at the start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should wholesale umbrellas start with ready stock or go straight to custom?

If you are testing the category for the first time, the season is close, or you do not yet know which model will sell, ready stock is usually the better way to verify. If you already have sales data, a clear brand position and a stable replenishment plan, private label / custom is where the value is.

What should a retailer’s first umbrella range include?

Usually a combination built around different buying reasons: a commuter folding model; an auto or upgraded model with a clear upgrade reason; a visually stronger straight or patterned model; and a kids model if the target customers fit. Golf and outdoor umbrellas can be separate expansion categories by channel.

What is the MOQ for custom umbrellas?

Our standard canopy customization is usually 200 pieces per colour, per design. Outdoor umbrellas usually start at 100 pieces. Special structures, moulds or special materials are re-confirmed against the specific specification.

Will ready-stock umbrellas be offered by category in the future?

Yes — we plan to organize ready stock separately and show purchasable models and stock information by umbrella category, so retail buyers can trial with ready stock first and then turn the models that sell into custom or private label.

What is the most important information on a retail ready-stock page?

Beyond the product photos, it should clearly state: SKU; in-stock colours; available quantity; MOQ / case pack; product size and weight; pieces per carton; packaging; carton data; shipping time; whether the model can be replenished; and whether a logo can be added or hang tags swapped.

Can one shipment mix different umbrella SKUs?

Mixed-SKU shipments can be discussed per order and packing plan. The key is that carton marks, the packing list and SKU identification are clear, so the warehouse can receive the goods directly.

Can the goods be produced under the retailer’s own brand?

Yes — private label / OEM / ODM development can be arranged per project. Canopy fabric, colours, patterns, frame, handle, tips, printing, hang tags, packaging and cartons can all enter the specification.

Can you provide product photos for online selling?

Yes, product photography can be arranged per order. The recommendation is to confirm the photo list during production rather than starting to prepare it after the goods leave the factory.

How do reorders keep the first batch’s colour and packaging?

Keep the Pantone / colour record, the approved physical sample, the packaging artwork, the SKU specification file and the version number, then re-confirm each replenishment against these records.

Adding an Umbrella Category to Your Store?

If you do not know yet which models fit best, you do not have to pick from dozens of products first.
